A Prayer for Students

God, Teacher, Friend,

We are starting something new;
You know what that’s like.
We are starting the new school year.
Backpacks are by the door again.
Lunch boxes are packed daily again.
Paper is stacked; notebooks purchased; classrooms assigned.
Some days we feel ready.
Some days we really don’t.
We are excited. We are nervous. We are hopeful.
Go with us, O God, as we go back to school.

Some of us are going to a new school, a bigger school:
to middle school, to high school, to kindergarten.
Some of us are returning to a familiar place,
but with new classmates and a new teacher.
Wherever we go, no matter how we get there,
by bus or car or bike,
go with us, O God, as we go back to school.

Bless our learning, playing, studying.
Walk beside us, befriend us, and guide us.
Make us kind to our friends, new and old,
and give us courage to try new things and meet new people.
Stretch our imaginations.
Soften our hearts.
Expand our minds.
And, open up the world before us.
Make us grateful, and fill us with joy.
Go with us, O God, as we go back to school.

We pray for our teachers.
We are so thankful for their passion,
and for the time they give, over and beyond what is required,
to make our days fun, creative, and engaging.
Give them strength.
Give them patience.
Bless their preparations; multiply their efforts.
Raise up parents, fellow teachers,
and administrators to support them every day.
Go with us, O God, as we go back to school.

Bless our hands for exploration, for sharing, for lifting up others.
Bless our feet for walking with confidence and peace.
And, bless our minds and hearts
for learning that leads us to service in love.
Go with us, O God, as we go back to school.

Amen.
